TechStartups: The Demise of Web 2.0
Submitted by matt on Thu, 2009-10-29 09:08I spent last weekend out in Santa Clara at the Google SOC Mentor Summit. The conference itself was fantastic, but at one point a lightbulb went on in my head, and I sat down and wrote an article. Head on over to Tech Startups and read about The Demise of Web 2.0.

I Grew Up in "Thin City"
CBS News recently featured the city in which I grew up. My Dad is the Parks and Recreation director of "Thin City", and he's interviewed in this short clip.
QueryPath slides from DrupalCon Paris, 2009
Submitted by matt on Thu, 2009-10-22 10:05I finally posted my slides for DrupalCon Paris at slideshare.
Feel free to download a copy and use it in conjunction with the video from Paris. The slides, though, cover some information that I did not have time to cover in the video. Conversely, the video features Ken and David each talking about QueryPath projects they worked on.
SPL in PHP 5.3
Submitted by matt on Wed, 2009-10-21 13:12Here is a great slideshow that explains what is so important (and so interesting) about the SPL libraries included in PHP 5.3.
And for additional reading, head over to the PHP manual: http://us3.php.net/manual/en/spl.datastructures.php
When I switched QueryPath from an array to an SplObjectStorage object, I noticed tremendous speed improvements. And the 5.3 random access extensions to SPLObjectStorage will continue to speed QueryPath's engine.
Migrating from Postbox to Mail.app in OS X
Submitted by matt on Tue, 2009-10-13 14:03I love Postbox, but at Palantir.net, we do not have the option to purchase an email client for our workstations. As my Postbox beta expired, I needed to export from Postbox into the OS X Mail.app. This migration is very simple.
The key fact to know is that Postbox stores its mail in the same format that Thunderbird uses. Mail.app already supports importing from Thunderbird. Assuming you already have an account set up in Mail.app, go to the File menu and choose Import mailboxes....
"Import mail" dialog
The import dialog suggests a path to Thunderbird. However, the path that should be used for Postbox is ~/Library/Ppostbox/Profiles (where the ~ is shorthand for your home directory).
Once you click Continue, Mail.app will import all of the folders and messages, including the Archive and Sent mailboxes. As far as I can tell, tags/labels are not imported.
When the import is finished, you should have a new Import folder in Mail.app's On My Mac section.
Imported Mailboxes
All of your old folders should be imported into the new Local Folders folder. You may notice that certain POP3 folders were imported with the name of my POP server. And all of the messages are marked as unread.
From there, you should be able to re-organize as you see fit.
Domain Scam and Domain Registry of America
I have received several dire-sounding email messages from Domain Registry of America. These messages make it sound like I requested a domain transfer from my current provider (with whom I am very happy) to the Domain Registry of America
This email indicates that you need to do something (unlock your registration) so that the domain transfer and renewal can be completed. Doing this is basically the first step in transferring a domain to a new provider. From there (presumably), DRA can transfer your domain and then bill you.
