Dave Hall: Review of "Drupal 6, JavaScript, and jQuery"

Dave Hall recently reviewed my Drupal 6, JavaScript, and jQuery book.

I found this observation particularly apt:

This book is definitely not for the copy and paste coder, nor the developer who just wants ready made solutions they can quickly hack into an existing project. Some may disagree, but I think this is a real positive of this book. Matt uses the examples to illustrate certain concepts or features which he wants the reader to understand. I found the examples got me thinking about what I wanted to use JS and jQuery for in my Drupal sites.

This is what I want to accomplish in the book. My goal is to get coders thinking about what they can do (and how they can do it) rather than simply re-using code. I'm so glad that Dave noticed this and brought it into focus. If you are interested in taking a peek at the book, you can download one of the chapters.

It might be a coincidence,

It might be a coincidence, however when I bought this book earlier this year along with "Learning Drupal 6 Module Development" I picked up some really useful information just in time to apply as a solution for a project I was working on.
I've found Matt's books really useful for getting to learn about Drupal quickly, they bring together various aspects of the Drupal API into a digestible chunk.

Copy and Paste Coder Books

Years ago I used to like copy and paste code example books, it made it easier to "write" code. These days I want books which gives me ideas on what I can X for. This is exactly what your book did. I'll be keeping an eye out for any of your future titles.

Like me, it seems that you are finding Mollom doesn't stop the sploggers :(

A Drupal 7 books is in the works

Yes, having quite a few Mollom issues lately. I think I came up with an automated solution that I might try -- should be a simple Drupal module. I did "get" to spend a few hours deleting SPAM today... 445 messages on Dec. 23 alone.

On books, I'm just starting "Learning Drupal 7 Development". This one I am co-authoring with several big Drupal developers: Crell, agentrickard, sdboyer, heyrocker, JohnAlbin, and mfer. I'm really excited about it.
